Welcome!

Welcome to HomeSchool "U" -- (short for university) -- because teaching school at home is an ongoing learning experience!

We have been a home school family since 1997. Even though this is our seventh year of home schooling my husband, Joel, and I are still learning! Every year brings with it new challenges. Each child, as he/she grows, adds a different dimension to our home school and to our family life. When we started on this journey, our oldest child, Zach, was five years old, and our daughter, Jenna, was only three. Back then, school was a lot easier in terms of what we studied and how we studied. Now, with Zach in sixth grade and Jenna in third grade, things have changed drastically. We don't use "alphabears" to spell words anymore, and we don't read boardbooks anymore. We don't use playdough and paint. Now we're using the Internet and reading books with 200+ pages and words like "bourgeways." (For a more indepth look at our home school history, click on the category by that title.)

Ah yes, and the simplicity of children without raging hormones is quickly becoming more scarce as well, since Zach is on the cusp of adolescence.

So, as we continue to learn about the unique lifestyle of home schooling, we are excited to share our newfound knowledge, hints, and tips with you. Hopefully our journey will encourage you on yours.

So welcome to HomeSchool "U"! Please visit often!

This is the first time I've visted your site. Something caught my eye as the page downloaded. I believe the American flag is always to be displayed with the field of stars at the top left. Can you check on this please?

Of course you are correct. I hadn't noticed! Thanks for catching this. I will have my web designer attempt to correct the problem.

i think that home schooling is a good thing to do to prevent conflict with your child and other students who goes to a public school. It is also good because if your child needs help in a certain area then you could help them and they could take as much time as needed to help them accomplish what they need to accomplish.

I'm a public jr. high reading teacher trying to help one of my students find the meaning of bourgeways! Can you help? Encouraged by your web site. Keep the faith. Pro 3:5,6

Hi Mona,

I believe the term "bourgeways" is a take-off of the word bourgeois. I found the following definition for bourgeoisie on Yahoo's reference site/dictionary:

"bourgeoisie (brzhwäzē´) , originally the name for the inhabitants of walled towns in medieval France; as artisans and craftsmen, the bourgeoisie occupied a socioeconomic position between the peasants and the landlords in the countryside. The term was extended to include the middle class of France and subsequently of other nations. The word bourgeois has also long been used to imply an outlook associated with materialism, narrowness, and lack of culture–these characteristics were early satirized by Molière and have continued to be a subject of literary analysis."

The line referring to the "outlook associated with materialism, narrowness, and lack of culture" seemed to fit with the way it was used in Mocassin Trail.

Hope this helps!
Thanks for the comment.

My husband and I are building a house and so I've been looking at different schools in the area and I'm really not too imprest. So I started to think I could home school my 2 boys, but this would be a huge step for me. I have a 5 year old Evan, and a 16 month old, Zackary. Have you heard of children being homeschooled where they will have say, math/reading with one parent and then gym/history with another persons parent? So the parent doesn't have all the subjects, they connect with other homeschooled parents and share the responsibility?

Thank you,

kelly

Hi Kelly,

Yes, I have heard of parents sharing the load of home schooling. I think it's great that you're looking at all your options!

One of the very best things you can do is get plugged in with other families who are also home schooling. There's nothing like a good support system when taking on such an endeavor as this. In fact, be sure to read my entry for tomorrow (December 9th). It speaks to the issue of how we need each other.

I pray God will guide you in all your research and decision-making.

Thanks for sending your question!

In Him,
Mary

Can you be homeschooled on the computer? I have 2 daughters one in grade 7 and the other in grade 8.
Would you be able to send me a curriculum for them? please and thank you

Wow, hey, I am a Homeschool dad, and was also reading Mocassin Trail to my kids and had to look up the word "Bourgeways" and you are the only page on the internet that I could find any information on that word. Very impressive!
God bless,
Mark C.
